Project's description

The Glasgow Subway was constructed as one large circular loop almost 6.5 miles (10.5 km) long and extends both north and south of the River Clyde. The tracks have the unusual narrow gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm), and a nominal tunnel diameter of 11 feet (3.35 m). As consequence the rolling stock is considerably small and tailored made. The system is described as two lines, the Outer Circle and Inner Circle, but this simply refers to the double track, having trains running clockwise and anticlockwise respectively around the same route although in separate tunnels. The subway’s running lines are entirely underground and include 15 underground stations.

This is a brownfield project in one of the oldest subway system in the world with provision of new Integrated System with new Rolling Stock (17 new Rolling Stock), Depot Equipment, Construction Works and Fixed Equipment including Signalling & Control System, PSDs, new Operation Control Centre (OCC) building and train driving simulator. The CBTC is an Automatic Train Control (ATC) with driverless functionalities.

The Core CBTC includes the following equipment: Carborne Controller, Train Operator Display, Zone Controller and FRONTAM. The Generic Application Core CBTC used for the project is already Certified.

The commissioning is planned in 2 phases from 2019 to 2021: a Test Train Operation Phase (CBTC GoA3) and a Full Train Operation Phase (CBTC GoA4).
